It is a thoroughly enjoyable two days. You learn heaps about materials and techniques in a small group of 4 students to one teacher. At the end of the second day you walk away with your own personal knife that I’m sure you will love telling your friends “I made this!”. Care and attention by Matt/Troy means the skill-challenged (like me) are well catered for.
Knife-making class by Eveleigh Works, was a great experience. You learn how to shape a piece of carbon steel into a beautiful knife using tools such as hammer, tongs, anvil, gas forge and grinder. Same as it was done for thousands of years. A few statements still used today are originating from those times: ‘too many irons in the fire’, ‘lose temper’, ‘forged money’ (in old times when you had to do more than just hit a Print button).
Our instructor Troy, was knowledgeable and helpful. Great to do something physical, I slept like a log after two hard days. I had to type in password in my mobile for a week, as my fingerprint was not recognized due to exposure to heat. This didn’t annoy me a bit, rather it reminded me of good time I had.
Another group made a hammer – a course also offered by Eveleigh Works. They had great time too, however I felt knife making was worth my time and money. A hammer they created is heavy and useful for tasks like forging or a demolition job, not for a simple house tasks.
